Ohio Tuesday, April 24, 2012 Justice Department closes investigation into Kent State shootings Says copy of the audio tape is inconclusive by WKSU's MARANDA SHREWSBERRY |
 Reporter Maranda Shrewsberry | | |
In The Region: The U.S. Justice Department announced this week it will not reopen the investigation of the Kent State shootings 42 years ago. Four students were killed and nine were wounded. One of the victims Alan Canfora had asked two years ago for a further review of what caused Ohio National Guard troops to open fire. That followed discovery of a copy of a tape that seemed to include pistol shots and an order to fire.
The Guard has maintained that there was no such order. Dean Kahler is one of the nine students wounded. He says he is disappointed in the Justice Department’s decision but not surprised. |
“I’ve said all along that until we get the original – I didn’t know the original was destroyed – until we get the original, there’s no sense in talking about this issue. And now I find out that there is no original – like I said it’s not unexpected.”
According to the Plain Dealer, the Justice Department says the copy of the audio tape is inconclusive and there are too many “legal and evidentiary barriers” to reopen the case.
