Lifestyle Thursday, April 19, 2012 Lawmakers cite Cleveland State study in call to double movie tax credit Study says the credit has returned $1.20 for each $1 credit by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |

In The Region: A major movie shot in Cleveland will be opening on May 4th. And like most of the movies shot in Ohio in the last three years, producers of “The Avengers” took advantage of the state’s film tax credit.
Two Cleveland-area Republican state lawmakers say that tax credit program is going so well that they want to double it. Sen. Tom Patton of Strongsville and Rep. Mike Dovilla of Berea are pinning their proposal to a study from the Center for Economic Development at Cleveland State University.
Researcher Candy Clouse (like ‘house’) says the study shows each dollar the state invested in the film tax credit more than paid for itself. |
“Of the 27 projects that shot in Ohio and took advantage of the tax credit, they generated an estimated economic impact of 1,143 full time equivalent jobs with a household income of an additional $35.3 million.”
Clouse says the benefits were felt not just in the film industry, but by hotels, rental agencies, construction supply companies and restaurants. The lawmakers want the tax credit doubled to $20 million, and say that still puts Ohio behind Michigan, which offers $25 million, and Pennsylvania, which offers $60 million.
