Education Wednesday, April 18, 2012 Cleveland school board votes to lay off over 500 teachers Cuts expected to save district $40 million by WKSU's AMANDA RABINOWITZ and JASEN SOKOL |
 Reporter Amanda Rabinowitz | | |
| Over 500 Cleveland teachers will be laid off to deal with budget issues and a decline in enrollment.
The move is expected to save the district around $40 million. Cleveland Schools CEO Eric Gordon said he thought he would need to cut 600 teachers but was able to reduce that number over the past two weeks.
But Cleveland Teachers Union President David Quolke still isn't happy: |
"When you take a look at cuts in the teaching field every single year, you really need to look at how to increase revenues or you're simply going to be cutting every year," he said.
He suggests seeking a tax levy or asking the state for more money before instituting layoffs.
The district hopes to recall around 200 teachers to replace teachers who take a retirement bonus. Gordon warns that more layoffs could be coming if the district can't come to an agreement with the teachers union on a pay cut for next year. |
