Cleveland school board votes to lay off over 500 teachers
Cuts expected to save district $40 million

Over 500 Cleveland teachers will be laid off to deal with budget issues and a decline in enrollment.

The move is expected to save the district around $40 million. Cleveland Schools CEO Eric Gordon said he thought he would need to cut 600 teachers but was able to reduce that number over the past two weeks.

But Cleveland Teachers Union President David Quolke still isn't happy:

"When you take a look at cuts in the teaching field every single year, you really need to look at how to increase revenues or you're simply going to be cutting every year," he said.

He suggests seeking a tax levy or asking the state for more money before instituting layoffs.

The district hopes to recall around 200 teachers to replace teachers who take a retirement bonus. Gordon warns that more layoffs could be coming if the district can't come to an agreement with the teachers union on a pay cut for next year.

Listener Comments:

I sent this email to Eric Gordon this morning. I hope to hear from him soon.

Mr. Gordon,

I am laid off for the 4th time in 3 years. I am sure you understand my frustration and I do not expect any sympathy. Is there no better way to fix the budget than to eliminate teachers? I feel like you and everyone else at the board really do not care about our students. Many of our students have no stability in their lives and you are taking away one of the few things that is stable. I think it might be in your best interest to focus on how you can improve our schools and how we can develop successful students who can function in today's society rather than focus on how we can save money and fix our budget. You might be stuck in a bind where your job depends on whether or not you can fix the budget, but our district is only going get worse with your plan described in your well-done, colorful powerpoint.

Sincerely,

Greg Dore'
