Tuesday, April 17, 2012 McCain's suggestion for vice president: Rob Portman Says Congressman Paul Ryan is the only other one as qualified as Portman by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER This story is part of a special series.

| The Republican who ran against President Obama in 2008 says he’d like to see an Ohioan near the top of the GOP ticket this year. Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler reports. |
A key point in the 2008 campaign of Republican presidential nominee John McCain was when he selected Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate – and introduced her for the first time in that role in Dayton. He has a suggestion for presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney when it comes to picking a VP – Ohio’s junior US Senator.
"I think that Rob Portman has to be one of the top contenders," McCain said. "He’s an incredible force in Washington on the economy and on budgetary issues. There’s nobody as qualified than him unless it’s Paul Ryan."
McCain was in Ohio campaigning with state treasurer Josh Mandel, who’s the GOP nominee running against incumbent Democratic US Senator Sherrod Brown. Two other like VP contenders have also been stumping for Mandel - Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. |
