In The Region:

On the fund raising side at least, the U.S. Senate race between Sherrod Brown and Josh Mandel is living up to expectations; it’s one of the most expensive races in the country.

Other than Ohio Supreme Court justices, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown is the only Democrat to hold statewide elected office in Ohio.
Josh Mandelhas been among the biggest fund-raisers in the country since he started mapping out his run for the U.S. Senate a few months after he was sworn in as state treasurer in January 2011.

The first-quarter 2012 campaign finance reports are due this week, and Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown’s report will show he raised close to $2.4 million dollars during the first three months of this year. In all, that gives Brown more than $6 million in the bank.

His GOP challenger, state Treasurer Josh Mandel, isn’t saying yet how much he brought in. But he’s been one of the most prolific fund raisers in the country.

And that’s continuing today with three fund-raising events featuring some of the biggest names in the Republican party.

Sen. John McCain will appear with Mandel in Columbus. Then, according to the Plain Dealer, Chris Christie will attend a private reception in Gates Mills, where couples who put up $10,000 can get their pictures taken with the New Jersey governor.  hristie and Mandel will finish out with a dinner  in Mayfield Village.

But the really big money in the race is expected to be raised and spent by Super Pacs, who are already running attack ads aimed primarily at Brown.
