Education Friday, April 13, 2012 University of Akron holds Black Male Summit Event focuses on college retention, graduation and engagement Story by GRANT ENGLE |
| | |
In The Region: The U.S Department of Education says that less than half of black men enrolled in a four-year college graduate within six years.
The University of Akron is looking to change that statistic.
The Office of Multicultural Development at the university is hosting its fifth-annual Black Male Summit this weekend.
The event focuses on helping black men graduate from college and create healthy relationships within the community.
Lee Gill is the chief diversity officer for the University of Akron. From the student union, he said even though the event is geared toward black men, the concepts at the summit can be universally applied. |
“While we’re focusing on, quote, African-American males, best practices that come from these initiatives will extrapolate across the university. And we’ll use the same strategies to see that all of our students are being retained and graduating.”
Between 600 and 700 people from Northeast Ohio attended the first day of the summit. |
