Fees at Kent State spark protest

Governor's office says graduating in three years is still worth it
Story by GRANT ENGLE

In The Region:

Clarification: The University of Cincinnati has set similar overload fees for 2012-13 schools year that, in some cases, are higher than Kent's. But the two fees have key differences.

  • Next year, Kent State’s overload fee will be $440 per credit hour for any hours a student takes above 17. The fee applies only to students who are taking at least some of their classes at the main campus in Kent; those taking classes exclusively at regional campuses are exempt.
  • Next year, The University of Cincinnati’s overload fee will be $450 for any hours above 18 taken by students on the main campus. The university charges lesser fees for its Clermont ($218) and Blue Ash ($246) campuses.

  • Gov. John Kasich has said every university in Ohio should give students the opportunity to graduate in three years, but some people say a major college is making that more difficult.

The Kent State University Board of Trustees recently passed a measure that charges students $440 for every credit hour over 17 this fall and over 16 in 2013.

William Liptak is a Kent State musical theater major with a minor in scenic design and construction. At a protest he organized, he said the new fees make it too expensive to graduate in four years.

But, Rob Nichols, Gov. Kasich’s spokesman, said even with the fees students end up saving money by graduating within three years.
