  • Ohio leads in on-line job postings
Ohio led the country last month in posting on-line help-wanted ads. And such advertising nationally has been up for four months in a row.
According to the Dayton Daily News, The Conference Board listed nearly 182,000 Ohio on-line job postings in March, up by nearly 9,000 from February. The board began tracking the on-line employment ads back in 2005.
The paper says the numbers mean Ohio now has two people out of work for every job opening. The state has been pushing Ohio colleges and universities to more closing match training to job openings.

Youngstown wants cameras to watch over water system
Youngstown City Council is considering spending as much as $60,000 on eight surveillance cameras to monitor the city’s water and wastewater operations.
The cameras will be watching for illegal activity, including people turning on water after they’ve been disconnected and others stealing manhole covers to sell as scrap metal.

Plain Dealer says juvi judges want social workers to handle emergency child cases
The Plain Dealer is reporting that juvenile judges in Cuyahoga County want to get out of emergency child custody hearings. The paper says the magistrates and judges feel that many of the calls for emergency hearings are "not true emergencies,"  and are disrupting their personal lives and court dockets. They want to appoint a social worker to make the decision.
The Plain Dealer says the Cuyahoga County prosecutor and public defender's office are both opposing the change. And the Ohio Supreme Court also criticized a similar practice back in 2004.
The county had more than 600 emergency cases last year, most involving children who are in physical danger. Social workers usually investigate and call a magistrate for an out-of-court hearing and court order to remove the child from the home.

    Indians extends Cabrera's contract
The Cleveland Indians have signed a two-year contract extension with All-Star shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. Terms of the deal have not yet been released.

Cabrera is 26, and made the All-Star team last year. For the season, he led American League shortstops in RBIs and had the most since Lou Boudreau’s 1948 season. He also hit 25 homeruns, the most for any Indian shortstop in the franchise’s history.
The Indians play their opening game at Progressive Field vs. Toronto, starting at 3 p.m.
