Education Wednesday, March 7, 2012 Teach for America coming to Cleveland charter schools The group places college grads without education degrees into high-need schools by WKSU's MOLLY BLOOM |
 Reporter Molly Bloom | | |
| This fall, as many as 50 Teach for America members will be working in Cleveland charter schools. Teach for America places recent college graduates, many from elite colleges, into high-poverty classrooms across America. |
Mike Wang leads Teach for America’s efforts to expand into northeast Ohio. He says no traditional public schools in the Cleveland area have signed on yet. “We’re delighted to be partnering with a number of great charter organizations and to continue discussions with districts and charter organizations throughout the spring and the summer, and see where that lands us in the fall of 2012," he said.
Teach for America has also developed a partnership with Cleveland State University: the new teachers can enroll in graduate-level education course work at the university.
The Cincinnati public school district will also be hiring Teach for America members.
Teach for America’s expansion into Ohio is funded by private dollars and by public money, including part of Ohio’s federal Race to the Top Grant.
