Economy and Business Friday, January 27, 2012 Cincinnati casino collapses Investigation underway following collapse that sent about a dozen workers to the hospital Story by TANA WEINGARTNER |
| | |
In The Region: An investigation is underway in Cincinnati following a partial collapse during construction of a casino that sent about a dozen workers to area hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. From Ohio Public Radio member station WVXU, Tana Weingartner reports the accident comes just a month after a similar incident in Cleveland. |
Workers were pouring concrete just before 8 o’clock this morning when the second story steel frame collapsed. The structure slumped in the middle, making a v-shape… sending workers and wet concrete sliding some 20 feet into the bottom of the V. The casino operator, Rock Gaming, says work won’t resume until officials determine conditions are safe. This is the second collapse at a Rock Gaming Casino construction site. A parking garage at the Cleveland casino collapsed in December. No one was injured there. Spokesman Steve Rosenthal says the events are unrelated.
“These are two different construction management companies, two different contractors, two different sites, two different areas. There’s absolutely nothing in common with the two different sites.”
Rosenthal denies the accident was caused by a rush in construction. Work was halted at both sites in early 2010 because of a dispute with the Governor. |
