Government Monday, November 21, 2011 Critics says dissolve Department of Development for job creation A conservative economist says dissolving the state's Department of Development will help create jobs in Ohio by WKSU's STATEHOUSE BUREAU CHIEF KAREN KASLER |
 Reporter Karen Kasler | | |
| The state’s job creating agency has made some changes – most notably, launching of the JobsOhio program. But Ohio Public Radio’s Karen Kasler reports that a conservative critic says the state should dismantle the Department of Development entirely if it really wants to promote job creation. |
JobsOhio is now up and running, and Department of Development director Christine Schmenk says pulling the jobs attraction and creation function from her agency is allowing the JobsOhio team to focus on its goal.
SCHMENK: “They are seeing success, which helps the state. What we’re seeing at the Department of Development is the ability to focus on our programs, make them even stronger.”
Conservative economist Richard Vedder from Ohio University has advocated for the dismantling of the Department of Development. And while he says JobsOhio is a step in the right direction, it’s not enough.
VEDDER: “The notion that the state of Ohio can somehow create jobs through the use of say, state resources, is in my view a misguided approach.”
Vedder would prefer the state spend money on what he calls a broad based approach to job creation, such as tax cuts. |
