Health and Medicine Thursday, August 25, 2011 Local MS study gains national attention Clinical trial in Cleveland uses adult stem cells to treat and possibly reverse damage from the immune disease by WKSU's DAWN EINSEL |
 Reporter Dawn Einsel | | |
| A Cleveland study into a treatment to reverse the effects of multiple sclerosis is drawing national attention and nearly $3 million from the U.S. Defense Department. The clinical trial is treating MS by extracting, cultivating and replacing a patient’s own adult stem cells.
The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Nicholas LaRocca says federally funded research is key when a disease affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S. and has no known cause or cure. |
Another $1 million in funds is coming from the National Institutes of Health. The trial is in its earliest phase, which tests safety and feasibility before effectiveness and benefits. |
