Crime and Courts Monday, August 1, 2011 Death penalty phase of trial begins for Cleveland serial killer Profiling expert says defense will bring new evidence to try to convince the jury to sentence Anthony Sowell to life in prison. by WKSU's DAWN EINSEL |
 Reporter Dawn Einsel | | |
 | | Anthony Sowell was convicted of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder after killing 11 women at his home on the eastern side of Cleveland. | The second phase of the Anthony Sowell death-penalty trial begins today in Cleveland. Jurors convicted the 51-year-old serial killer on 82 counts of kidnapping, rape and aggravated murder 10 days ago.
University of Akron professor Mary Meyers teaches a class on serial –killer profiling. She says mitigation will bring out details that were not heard by jurors in the guilt-phase of the trial because Sowell’s lawyers have a different purpose. |
Meyers says she expects the mitigation phase will last for another two to three weeks before the jury decides whether to recommend Sowell be put to death or spend the rest of his life in prison. |
