Economy and Business Tuesday, July 19, 2011 Feds pump $6.6 million into fuel cell market Expert says Northeast Ohio has several key elements that make it a contender to capture a growing fuel-cell market by WKSU's ANNA STAVER |
 Reporter Anna Staver | | |
| The Department of Energy is partnering with the Department of Defense to install backup power systems that use fuel cell technology at eight military bases across the U.S. They include a National Guard base in Columbus.
Robert Savinell is a professor of chemical engineering at Case Western Reserve University. He says the project will serve as a small-scale test market for fuel- cell technologies. And if a larger, commercial market develops as a result, Savinell says Northeast Ohio is uniquely poised to capture it. |
Savinell says the fuel-cell generators will provide data that power companies like Akron-based First Energy could use to begin to develop energy alternatives that are commercially viable. |
