Politics Wednesday, June 29, 2011 Cleveland files federal suit to stop hospital closing Despite an agreement with East Cleveland, Cleveland city officials say they plan to fight the closing of Huron Hospital Story by ANNA STAVER |
| | |
In The Region: The city of Cleveland filed a federal suit today (Wednesday) over the closing of Cleveland Clinic’s Huron Hospital. The suit was filed shortly after the Clinic reached a deal with East Cleveland, where the hospital is located. The Clinic has agreed to give East Cleveland $8 million, tear down the building, and turn the property into green space for that city.
But the city of Cleveland is suing because it says the hospital’s closing will cause a gap in trauma service. Clinic spokeswoman Eileen Sheil says the clinic has been working closely with both cities. |
But Cleveland’s Law Director Robert Triozzi says that’s not the case. He says that until two weeks ago, the Clinic told Cleveland that the hospital would remain open even if the trauma center closed.
Cleveland Clinic says Huron Hospital loses millions of dollars each year and it can no longer afford to keep the facility open. The Clinic plans to stop in-patient services at Huron in September. |
