Environment Friday, April 22, 2011 Fracking spill contained PA spill could have ramifications for Ohio's Marcellus Shale plans by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: A spill of fracking fluid in Pennsylvania has been contained, just as Governor Kasich wants to increase the use of the technology in Ohio.
Fracking uses a mix of chemicals, sand and water to break up rocks and release the natural gas underneath.
Thousands of gallons of fluid crossed farm fields and entered a stream near Canton, Pennsylvania before Tuesday’s spill was contained. Environmental groups have been critical of Kasich’s plan to allow drilling on the Ohio side of the natural rock formation, the Marcellus Shale. Tom Stewart, spokesman for the Ohio Oil and Gas Association, says the Pennsylvania spill is likely the result of equipment failure, but Ohio’s Senate Bill 165 would prevent a similar situation here. |
Chesapeake Energy says drilling won’t resume at the site till a cause is found. Bradford County officials said seven evacuated families ae still out of their homes. |
