Ohio Thursday, February 24, 2011 Kasich in Youngstown Governor faces pro-union protestors by WKSU's KABIR BHATIA |
 Reporter Kabir Bhatia | | |
In The Region: Gov. John Kasich was in Youngstown today speaking to a receptive chamber of commerce. But outside, protestors continued weeks of condemnation of the governor’s plan to outlaw strikes and end most collective bargaining for public workers. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia has more on the battle. |
On each of his recent trips to Northeast Ohio, the Governor has argued that southern states are – quote – “eating our lunch” when it comes to attracting business. Climate aside, he says Ohio’s powerful unions are stumbling block for companies looking to invest. Senate Bill 5 would end most collective bargaining for public employees. Electrician Frank Grissick was out protesting in support of his wife, a school teacher.
But Gov. Kasich says he has nothing against unions – just against what he sees as their excesses.
Republicans are trying to pass the collective bargaining bill by early March, before the governor unveils a biennial budget he says will dramatically change Ohio.
