Science and Technology Friday, January 28, 2011 Architects renovate Cleveland federal building Safety, efficiency main goals in multi-million dollar project Story by DAWN EINSEL |
| | |
Think of it as a 32-story thermos bottle. Cleveland’s Anthony J. Celebrezze Federal Building will undergo a $121 million renovation that will wrap a glass and metal skin around the existing facade.
Architect Charles Young of Chicago’s Interactive Design Eight Architects says the Celebrezze building will be the first high-rise in the country to be retrofitted with protective skin. And he says the reason it came first is because it’s badly deteriorated. |
Energy efficiency also is a goal in the project. The space between the original building and new wall will act as both a filter and insulation, lowering energy costs by an estimated $600,000 to $700,000 a year.
A third focus of the design is to better protect it against an attack. The new wrap must be able to withstand a blast without the glass shattering and injuring occupants.
Construction is to begin this summer and conclude in 2014. Meanwhile, Young says that the building will remain fully occupied. |
