Crime and Courts Tuesday, November 24, 2009 Ohio food banks getting a boost from prison farms First-year program giving food to Ohio food banks that was grown by inmates by WKSU's STATEHOUSE CORRESPONDENT JO INGLES |
 Reporter Jo Ingles | | |
| Ohioans who find it hard to afford food for their families are getting a helping hand from Ohioans who live behind prison bars. Throughout the spring, summer, and fall, inmates at Ohio's lockups have been working on prison farms to raise food for Ohioans who need it. The head of Ohio's Second Harvest Food Banks, Lisa Hamler Fugitt says fresh fruits and vegetables from the prison farms have been donated to hungry Ohioans. |
This was the first year for the program. Prison officials say it gives inmates an opportunity to give back to their communities while also providing them with valuable skills that can assist them upon their release. |
