Keeping Northeast Ohio landfill under control
State reaches $10 million settlement with Countywide
by WKSU'S KAREN SCHAEFER
|
|
The state has reached a settlement with Republic Services on how to manage a northeast Ohio landfill where an underground fire burned for years. Republic also will also pay 10-million dollars in civil penalties for the problems at Countywide Landfill
Three-million of that money goes to a community benefit fund to recompense southern Stark and northern Tuscarawas county residents who had to endure years of noxious odors. The rest will be used to clean up orphaned landfills around the state.
The 88 acres of the landfill where the fire burned has been isolated and covered in thick black plastic. Standing next to that section, Ohio EPA environmental engineer Kurt Princic [PRINCE-sick] says the EPA still doesn't understand all the conditions that triggered the fire.

Waste aluminum deposited in the landfill reacted with water and oxygen, starting a chemical reaction that sent temperatures within the landfill soaring. EPA and other public officials will hold a public meeting tonight at the Tuscarawas Valley High School to discuss the management plan.
