Ohio Department of Health begins program this weekend to control spread of raccoon rabies
Baits are set to vaccinate raccoons against rabies

Health and wildlife control officials are taking action this weekend in an effort that they believe will help prevent rabies in raccoons. In an interview with Statehouse correspondent Jo Ingles, Kristopher Weiss with the Ohio Department of Health explains the annual program.

Weiss says the vaccine program has proven successful sincec it began in 1997. More than 13 million baits have been distributed in Ohio.
The Ohio Department of Health says one skunk from Lake County tested positive for rabies this year. That's down significantly from 2008 when nine rabid animals from Lake and Trumbull Counties testes positive for the disease. the seven state efforts should be complete in Ohio by the end of this month.
