Sports Thursday, January 01, 2009 Indians acquire Mark DeRosa
by WKSU's MARK URYCKI |
 Senior Reporter Mark Urycki | | |
| The Cleveland Indians have acquired infielder Mark DeRosa in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. The Indians sent three minor league pitchers to the Cubs for DeRosa.
Indians general manager Mark Shapiro says the 33-year-old DeRosa will play 3rd base for the Tribe. After spending big money to acquire relief pitcher Kerry Wood, Shapiro says they will have to be creative to get any other players.
"He's a right handed hitter. He's extremely versatile, a high character guy with postseason experience. He fits well in our lineup, I think he fits well with the culture of our team and be a productive player as well. So he's gonna help us win from every side you look at it," Shaprio said.
DeRosa hit a career-high 21 homers and drove in 87 runs last season while playing six different positions for the NL Central champs. |
