The Songs of Insects
Calls from a huge variety of crickets and katydids define the sound of summer.

They're seldom seen but you can't miss them.
Late summer evenings are alive with the chirps, trills, and clicks of singing insects. The familiar field cricket is just one member of the large family of insects known as orthoptera. Their love songs are symbolic of a peaceful night, and although they may lull some people to sleep, one area naturalist is up late combing his backyard for the insect orchestra.
