Summer time brings flex time trial at Kent State
Four-days weeks tried to save gas
by WKSU's M.L. SCHULTZE

News Director
M.L. Schultze

At the same time the state is cutting back on flexible work weeks, Kent State University is trying out four-day weeks with its maintenance staff. One big motive is to try to cut employee commute costs.

Marilyn on French TV at WKSU. And they say custodians aren't important. Way to go Louise!

Marilyn you did a great job! I just wish I knew French. And where was your french maid outfit? You little film star.

It's actually making international news on Monday.A French television crew will be interviewing Marilyn Gilak, a custodian and following her work schedule through out the day.

I can't see this working with the other departments (Skilled-Trades, etc) simply because KSU doesn't employ enough of them in the first place.

KSU has a carton of eggs with only six eggs in it. It doesn't matter how fast they move them from slot-to-slot, and it doesn't matter if the carton is 2 by 6 or 3 by 4. There just aren't enough eggs.

Although this is a nice attempt at reducing the "costs of going to work" for some of the workers, it does not address the underlying problem: KSU does not employ sufficient workers for its needs, and it seriously under-pays the employees it has.
If KSU paid it's workers a decent wage (which it can easily afford), the "four ten's" experiment would hardly be necessary.

Just my $.02
