Ohio ethanol boom could go bust
Producers searching for fuel sources other than corn

Ohio opened its first ethanol plants this year and, along with other Midwestern states, has been ramping up its production of the home-grown fuel. But with critics now linking global food shortages to U.S. production of ethanol from corn, Ohio producers may be pressured to find other fuel sources.

Ohio's first ethanol plant opened in the northwestern town of Leipsic in January. POET Energy, which owns the plant, is the nation's largest producer of corn-based ethanol
One of the byproducts of ethanol production is distillers grain, which can be used as cattle feed
Ethanol is shipped by tankers like this one to gas stations around Ohio. E85 is a blend of ethanol and gasoline
POET is building two more refineries in Ohio, including this one in Fostoria. By the end of the year, Ohio will have seven ethanol plants in production
Ohio farmers have done well from selling their crops to ethanol plants. In Deshler, a few miles north of Leipsic, town signs proudly advertise the connection to corn
