Hoover High School students are 'swinging'

Friday, April 18, 2008

Students at a Stark County high school are trading in hip hop for big band. A swing dancing math teacher at North Canton's Hoover High School got several grants for his school to learn the steps and history that goes along with Swing.

Listener Comments:

I am Math teacher Troy Kozee's mom. I followed this project as Troy was working on it wishing they had done things like this when I was in high school! I grew up dancing "jitterbug", but swing dance is the ancestor of jitterbug and actually a lot more fun.
At least one of the local school districts still offer swing dance lessons under their adult education classes which my husband and I attended when Troy was young. I think the idea of incorporating swing dancing into studies about the history and art of the 1920s to 1940s couldn't be a better way to make history come ALIVE for the kids. I'm proud of my son and his co-workers for thing of it! I'm sure the kids had fun with this not so boring history lesson.

I am Valerie the swing dance teacher who worked with the students at Hoover. Those students were amazing! So much fun! John and I had the most amazing interactions with them this week. The dance last night was such a huge success. It really surprised me to see them all dancing the Jitterbug all night long. It was also fun to watch them teach each other new moves and make up new ones on the fly. Exactly how it would have happened 50 some years ago. History always repeats itself. Now they realize how hip Gram and Gramps actually were ... and are!

Also, a huge thanks to the staff at Hoover for being so supportive of us!

Hope to see those kids out on the dance floor for many years to come!

Valerie
