King's history entwined with Cleveland's

Martin Luther King Junior was no abstract national figure in Cleveland 40 years ago. He was a friend and political supporter of Carl and Louis Stokes, and just months before King's death, he was playing a key role in making Carl Stokes the first elected black mayor of a major U.S. city. WKSU's Vivian Goodman spoke about that relationship with Susan Cash, associate curator for African-American History at the Western Reserve Historical Society. Cash noted that King's visits to Cleveland began in 1956, and accelerated throughout 1967, as he campaigned for Stokes " and for black voters.
