Ohio Park Buildings Going Green

by WKSU's KAREN SCHAEFER

Reporter

Most parks celebrate green space and the natural environment. But there's a new trend in many Northeast Ohio parks to extend that concept to the built environment. Green buildings are now popping up in parks across the region and around the state.

At Sandy Ridge Reservation in the Lorain County Metroparks, park officials decided ten years ago to incorporate green building elements in the park's headquarters
One of the key green features of the Sandy Ridge building is an outdoor wetland that naturally performs the final treatment of wastewater from the building
A sign at the wetland filtration pool lets visitors know that microorganisms are at work. What most don't know is that at the bottom of the pond, coils of black tubing serve to pull cooler temperatures in summer and warmer temperatures in winter as part of a geothermal heating and cooling system
Another green educational feature of the building are the bird and butterfly gardens that attract examples of the local fauna
At the Sand Run Reservation in Summit County, park officials are converting a former residence into a new park office that may become one of the greenest buildings in the state.
In addition to geothermal heating and colling, solar panels and composting toliets, the Sand Run parks building is using a lot of recycled materials, like these bags of insulation salvaged from the walls
Even exterior brick is being recycled. Workers deconstructed, rather than demolished, knocking mortar off old bricks and stacking them for re-use.
Even the materials used to divert any construction run-off from this waterway are made from eco-friendly materials like jute, hemp and cocoanut fiber
