WKSU Commentator Remembers Star Wars On 30th Anniversary of Release

On this day (Friday) in 1977 the lives of children and parents in a galaxy not so far away would be changed forever. Star Wars opened in theaters. The 30th anniversary of the release of the original film is being celebrated by fans nationwide. WKSU Commentator John Booth is one of them. Booth isn't quite sure of the date that marks his initial viewing, but many other details are clear.

I saw Star Wars for the first time at the Gateway Movie Theater in Ft. Wayne, IN. My Dad had read a review in Time magazine, but I wasn't excited. I had a crush on Richard Dreyfuss after seeing Close Encounters of the Third Kind and I thought this movie was trying to steal Close Encounters' thunder. After seeing Star Wars, I (of course) switched my crush to Mark Hamill and became completely obsessed with the film. I read the book, bought the poster, saw it again (and I never see movies more than once in theatres). I still love it today.
