Akron and Cleveland are Jumping on the Urban Revival Bandwagon

Cleveland's mayoral candidates both promise to breathe new life into one of the nation's poorest big cities. Challenger Frank Jackson stresses safer streets and stronger schools while incumbent Jane Campbell points to her record of revitalizing downtown. Downtown living may be the next big thing in Northeast Ohio. New houses, apartments, lofts, and condos are already attracting renters and owners to downtown Cleveland and Akron while major new developments are under construction or on the drawing boards. The future of the new urban housing boom depends on how much developers, and potential residents are willing to risk:

Akron urban planner Jerry Egan stands before a billboard advertising the Northside Lofts in the North Hill neighborhood.
The Artefino gallery and cafe at the Tower Press Lofts at E. 19th and Superior in downtown Cleveland is a gathering place. Most of the residents of the rehabbed building are artists.
Conor Coakley lives at the Bridgeview apartments in Cleveland's Warehouse District and shops at Constantino's, an upscale grocery on the ground floor of the building.
A model home is already constructed at the Hope VI/Elizabeth Park housing developement, a former public housing project near the center of Akron. Homes here will be for sale and for rent and priced for mixed demographics.
