State Representative and Farmer to Propose State Fruit

Monday, March 15, 2004

If one farmer and one state legislator get their way...the state of Ohio will soon declare an official "state fruit." It won't be the apple. It won't be the pear. And it won't be the grape. Instead, it will be something a lot more unusual--the paw paw. The proposal comes from the head of the Ohio Paw Paw Growers Association, Chris Shmeel. He's convinced State representative Jimmy Stewart to introduce the idea in bill form in the legislature. Statehouse correspondent Bill Cohen asked Shmeel to give us a brief course we might call "paw paw 101."
