If you look at the rural parts of northeastern Ohio, you might think the
region is booming. Farmlands in Medina and Wayne counties, and wood-lands in
Geauga and Portage counties, are now sites for residential developments and
commercial strip plazas. But the fact is, we're not growing; we're expanding.
The overall population has declined slightly, but we're using far more land
than ever. At this rate, says a Cleveland University study, we will empty
out the city of Cleveland in forty years. In part one of our series
on urban sprawl, WKSU's Mark Urycki looks at the problems of expansion.
