Canal Boat Captain Pearl R. Nye collected hundreds of folk songs and was recorded in the 1930s in Akron by John and Alan Lomax.
The Library of Congress in Washington houses a massive collection of American traditional music. Much of it was recorded in the 1930s by folklorists traveling through the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi Delta.
