Canal Boat Captain Pearl R. Nye collected hundreds of folk songs and was recorded in the 1930s in Akron by John and Alan Lomax.

The Library of Congress in Washington houses a massive collection of American traditional music. Much of it was recorded in the 1930s by folklorists traveling through the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi Delta. But the source of one of the most extensive compilations of 19th and early 20th century American music is a former canal boat captain from Ohio. Captain Pearl Nye was born in Ohio 137 years ago this month.
