Monday, October 15, 2012 Mandel vs. Brown fills the Cleveland City Club Mandel says he would have opposed auto rescue; Brown says it saved jobs and whole industries by WKSU's KEVIN NIEDERMIER This story is part of a special series.
Reporter Kevin Niedermier
In The Region:
The candidates in Ohio’s hotly contested U.S. Senate race had their first debate today in Cleveland. Incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown and his challenger, Republican state Treasurer Josh Mandel, traded barbs at the Cleveland City Club before more than a thousand supporters. Brown called Mandel dishonest in his campaign ads, and attacked him for not supporting the auto rescue.
“Josh Mandel says my vote on the auto rescue, and I assume Sen. Voinvoich’s vote too, was un-American. Un-American. I call that vote doing my job to fight for their jobs.”
Mandel responded that the auto industry’s problems were caused by bad regulatory and tax policies in Washington.
“I will do everything I can in Washington to grow the economy through strong manufacturing policy, strong auto manufacturing policy as well. But I’m not a bailout senator. He’s the bailout senator, bailed out Wall Street, Fannie and Freddie and large corporations.”
Recent polls show Brown leading Mandel by a few points despite the groups supporting Mandel spending some $20 million in ads attacking Brown.
