Portman on Romney bus tour doesn't mean VP pick
Political analyst says Portman's appearances mean Romney needs the political boost
by WKSU's KELLI FITZPATRICK
This story is part of a special series.

As presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney starts his bus tour this week, many speculate that he will be announcing his running mate. And with U.S. Senator Rob Portman slated to appear at stops in Ohio and Colorado, the buzz continues to grow that Portman could be chosen as vice presidential candidate.

Jason Johnson is a political analyst and professor at Hiram College. He says Portman’s appearance on the bus tour does not necessarily mean Portman is the running mate pick—Romney just needs the support, because past Republican administrations are not helping to campaign.

“Taking Rob Portman is not an indicator that you want Rob Portman to be your VP. It’s an indicator that you don’t have that many people you can campaign with; you’ve got to take who you can find.”

Johnson says Romney’s likely running mate choice is still “up in the air.” But he says that suspense is giving Romney a “boost” as he enters the last three campaigning months.

Whoever Romney picks for his running mate will need to get fitted for their Magic Mormon Underwear soon! These sacred undergarments harness the power of the Almighty to cinch up the Bible Belt to cough up their cash for their crusade to the White House.
