In The Region: Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel is officially running for the U.S. Senate. He’s been raising money for months, is on the March 6th primary ballot and is favored to win Republican nomination. But, until a speech Thursday at the Akron Press Club, he hadn’t “declared” his candidacy. WKSU’s Tim Rudell reports. |

Call it “a calling”…so says 34-year-old Josh Mandel, a rising star in the Ohio Republican Party.
Although his successful 2010 campaign for state treasurer included a promise to serve his term without seeking higher office, Mandel began exploring a run for Democrat Sherrod Brown’s Senate seat within weeks taking the oath as treasurer. When questioned about that today Mandel said he felt compelled by a critical situation. “All of us, at some point in our lives, feel called to serve a purpose greater than our self-interest. Right now these partisan politicians in Washington are driving our country off a cliff. Sherrod Brown is behind the steering wheel. We cannot wait another six years to turn this country in a different direction.”
Mandel has collected upwards of 4 million dollars for his campaign and is expected Tuesday to defeat five other candidates for the Republican nomination -- none of whom is well known. Democrat Brown also has been pulling in big money, and their race in November is expected to be among the biggest spending in the country. |
