Finale and flood for Cleveland's Youth Orchestra
Sudden rainstorm swells the Salzach River just before closing concert of Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchesra tour

The finale of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra tour was also the finale for the young musicians who will be moving on now to other adventures and accomplishments. Some will continue music studies and become professional musicians, but not all.  WKSU’s Vivian Goodman has been reporting on the tour from Austria. She spoke with violinists Maria Beltavski and Stephanie Lee just before the concert began.

Today is the final day of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra’s European tour. A 13th century Gothic church in the heart of Vienna, Austria, reverberated with the passionate playing last night of the Cleveland Orchestra’s Youth Orchestra. There was Brahms, Elgar, Wagner, Dvorak and a special guest. WKSU’s Vivian Goodman brings us more from Vienna.

Young Clevelanders visit the classical music Mecca
Sightseeing amid performances on the youth orchestra's first international tour

The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra's first international tour has included well-received performances in Prague and Vienna. But the kids are also coping with record heat and other tour challenges. Today, all they had on their agenda was sightseeing.  WKSU's Vivian Goodman has this report on their visit to the Mecca of classical music: Vienna’s Musikverein.

Some family members have joined the tour

Parents have accompanied many of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra musicians to Europe, and they are thrilled at the success so far of the tour. As it wraps up Wednesday night in Salzburg, WKSU’s Vivian Goodman spoke with one proud dad:

Great success for the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra in the start of its first international tour
Dvorak's 8th Symphony at Prague's Dvorak Hall drew an audience of 700 and the conductor was called back for many bows.

Tonight, at a 13th century Gothic church in the heart of Vienna, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra has a hard act to follow:  namely it's own triumph in Prague over the weekend in the opening concert of its tour. WKSU's Vivian Goodman reports from Vienna that the ensemble and its conductor are still bathing in the glow of standing ovations, and savoring the memory of a different kind of treat, a dinner cruise.

 When an unusual talent propels a child into the spotlight, the entire family is likely to get involved. And that's why about 13 family members are travelling with the Cleveland Orchestra’s Youth Orchestra on its European tour. WKSU's Vivian Goodman spoke with some of the chaperones as the 75 musicians were about to embark on a Viennese sight-seeing tour.

Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra Tours Europe
First international tour in the ensemble's 26-year history

Seventy-five Clevelanders are embarking for Europe to play Brahms, Elgar, Dvorak and Wagner in some of its finest concert halls. It’s not the legendary Cleveland Orchestra, but it’s close. The Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra rehearses and performs at Severance Hall and Cleveland Orchestra members teach, coach and lead the ensemble. WKSU’s Vivian Goodman reports this will be its first international tour.
