One result of the Cleveland Orchestra’s current European tour could be a trip to Eastern Europe in about two years. WKSU’s Vivian Goodman reports that the invitation has been extended  because the Slovakian version of our Declaration of Independence was signed in Cleveland.

The Orchestra's European Advisory Board aims for greater reach and more financial support

The Cleveland Orchestra tour of Europe reaches its finale tonight at Vienna’s famed Musikverein, but we’re beginning to hear the overture of an expanded presence in Austria and the other European nations. At the intermission of last night’s concert Executive Director Gary Hanson announced that the orchestra will return to Vienna sooner than expected for concerts next year at both the Musikverein and the Vienna Konzerthaus.

WKSU’s Vivian Goodman has been following the tour and spoke with the vice chairman of the Cleveland Orchestra’s  European Advisory Board.

Playing Beethoven and Shostakovich all over Europe can give you an appetite. Cleveland Orchestra musicians are on tour eight weeks a year, so they learn how to eat well away from home. Many of them are dedicated foodies. Thursday in Vienna, after a rehearsal  at the Musikverein, WKSU’s Vivian Goodman joined a trio ... for lunch.

How the Cleveland Orchestra's instruments travel overseas: Very carefully
Stage Manager Joe Short's job is part builder, part weather forecaster, and all caution

The Cleveland Orchestra’s tour of Europe is an enormous undertaking. In all, including the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus which is along for four of the concerts, about 260 musicians and their support staff will have traveled to eight cities in about 2 1/2 weeks. Every hall has different acoustical challenges, not to mention the delicate work of transporting the instruments safely to each of their destinations. That’s been the responsibility of Stage Manager Joe Short for the past 13 seasons. WKSU’s Vivian Goodman is following the orchestra on tour and had a chance in Cologne to talk with Short:

Cleveland Orchestra's biggest fan in Vienna
The Chief Librarian of the Vienna State Opera shares Franz Welser Most's reverence for Vienna's musical history

Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser Most is also General Music Director of the Vienna State Opera. So he has a second residence in Vienna.  His neighbor in the city's historic First District is his good friend, Peter Poltun, Chief Librarian of the VSO.

WKSU's Vivian Goodman is reporting this week on the orchestra's European tour, which will include concerts in Vienna.  She stopped by Poltun's office, a hallowed place filled with manuscripts and memories.

A little tourism and a lot of practice for Cleveland's orchestra in Cologne

The Cleveland Orchestra is on a tour of Europe.  WKSU’s Vivian Goodman caught up with the musicians over the weekend in Cologne, Germany’s fourth largest city. It was heavily bombed in World War II and most of the buildings are modern, but the city’s landmark has stayed intact since the Middle Ages.

Then it’s on to Luxembourg and Cologne where WKSU News will join the musicians for the final concerts of their 18-day European tour. Just before leaving Cleveland, Music Director Franz Welser Most talked with WKSU’s Vivian Goodman.
