Events & Features

Celebrate the holidays as WKSU offers seasonal sounds during Classical music programs throughout December. Other special treats include Folk music with a holiday theme from Judy Collins, Peter Oshtrusko, Jim Blum and more. Premieres for 2007 include a new installment of Ornaments & Icing: Songs and Stories of the Holidays and More Holiday Stories from the Gundie Journal. Apollo's Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, shines in a series of performances in the weeks leading up to Christmas. Mark the arrival of 2008 with a rebroadcast of Garrison Keillor's New Year's Eve show from the Ryman Auditorium and the annual Vienna Philharmonic New Year's Day concert.

Listen to the best in holiday music beginning after Thanksgiving and increasing in frequency as Christmas nears.

Clarence Fountain and his legendary, Grammy Award-winning gospel group present their take on Christmas classics along with some gospel favorites.

A Prairie Home Companion regular Peter Ostroushko and his Heartland Ensemble warm the soul with folksy holiday favorites and traditional carols from around the world.

Midnight — A Holiday Music Tour with Judy Collins

Musical takes on the holidays by Trout Fishing in America, Steve Earle, Tish Hinojosa, Ian Anderson, the Blind Boys of Alabama and others.



SUNDAY, DECEMBER 16

6:00 am — A Cowboy Christmas

Celebrate the holiday with memories, music, and poetry of people who live and work in America’s outback, featuring Baxter Black and Native American singer Vincent Craig.

8:00 pm — A Christmas Carol with Jonathan Winters

In this public radio tradition, master comedian Jonathan Winters offers a distinctive reading of the holiday classic, using the performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations.

9:00 pm — Ornaments and Icing 2006

Last season’s version of this WKSU favorite, featuring Nanci Griffith, Roger McGuinn, Peter Yarrow, Chad & Jeremy, The Wailin’ Jennys and more.

10:00 pm — Seasonal Folk Music with Jim Blum

Host Jim Blum marks winter and the season’s holidays with a wide-range of music from the WKSU folk music library.

7:00 pm — Bach: Christmas Oratorio

Jeanette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, present one of Bach’s most joyful and sumptuous works – a collection of six sacred cantatas.



WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19

7:00 pm — Bach’s Magnificat and Cantata 140

Bach’s major vocal work based on the canticle of Mary is presented by Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, along with Cantata 140, one of Bach’s best-known pieces.



THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20

7:00 pm — More Holiday Stories from The Gundie Journal

WKSU Producer Joe Gunderman presents all new seasonal tales and revisits Alexandra The Christmas Imp (with help from Joe Tait and Mike Snyder).

8:00 pm — Christmas Vespers with Apollo’s Fire

The splendor of trumpets, trombones, lutes, strings and recorders are joined by children’s voices in joyous celebration as Apollo’s Fire performs Praetorius Christmas Vespers.

7:00 pm — Happy Holidays from American Routes

Host Nick Spitzer presents a taste of seasonal music representing the broad range of the sound of America.

Aired live from King's College Chapel in Cambridge, this program blends scripture, song and readings in a unique celebration of the birth of Jesus.

12:00 pm — A Classical Christmas with WKSU

Enjoy your Christmas festivities with a musical holiday gift drawn from the classical repertoire by hosts David Roden, Mark Pennell and Sylvia Docking.

6:00 pm — Handel’s Messiah with Apollo’s Fire

Cleveland’s Baroque Orchestra under the direction of Richard Egarr welcomes Apollo’s Singers and guest vocalists for a performance of Handel’s beloved opus.
