Events & Features

Holiday music on WKSU begins on Dec. 4 as seasonal sounds are introduced into classical music with the WKSU hosts and continues through Jan. 1 as 2007 is rung in with a New Year's Day concert featuring works by Strauss and friends from the Vienna Philharmonic. Folk music fans have a range of choices as Jay Ungar & Molly Mason, Kate & Anna McGarrigale, Judy Collins, Peter Oshtrusko and others ring out joyous sounds for winter celebrations. WKSU's Jim Blum and Joe Gunderman are back with a new version of the award-winning Ornaments & Icing: Songs and Stories of the Holidays, Jonathan Winters' 'A Christmas Carol' makes a triumphant return to the schedule, and Garrison Keillor says, "Happy New Year," live from the Ryman Auditorium. Also, discover the connection between comic book superheroes and the Maccabees and celebrate Kwanzaa in story and song. Find more in the WKSU Holiday Programming Schedule for 2006.

Celebrate the holiday with memories, music, and poetry of people who live and work in America’s outback, featuring Baxter Black and Native American singer Vincent Craig.

8:00 pm — A Christmas Carol with Jonathan Winters

In this public radio tradition, master comedian Jonathan Winters offers a distinctive reading of the holiday classic, using the performing edition prepared by Dickens for his own presentations.

9:00 pm — Ornaments and Icing 2006

Last season’s version of this WKSU favorite, featuring Nanci Griffith, Roger McGuinn, Peter Yarrow, Chad & Jeremy, The Wailin’ Jennys and more.

10:00 pm — Seasonal Folk Music with Jim Blum

Host Jim Blum marks winter and the season’s holidays with a wide-range of music from the WKSU folk music library.

7:00 pm — Bach: Christmas Oratorio

Jeanette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, present one of Bach’s most joyful and sumptuous works – a collection of six sacred cantatas.



WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 19

7:00 pm — Bach’s Magnificat and Cantata 140

Bach’s major vocal work based on the canticle of Mary is presented by Apollo’s Fire, the Cleveland Baroque Orchestra, along with Cantata 140, one of Bach’s best-known pieces.



THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20

7:00 pm — More Holiday Stories from The Gundie Journal

WKSU Producer Joe Gunderman presents all new seasonal tales and revisits Alexandra The Christmas Imp (with help from Joe Tait and Mike Snyder).

8:00 pm — Christmas Vespers with Apollo’s Fire

The splendor of trumpets, trombones, lutes, strings and recorders are joined by children’s voices in joyous celebration as Apollo’s Fire performs Praetorius Christmas Vespers.

7:00 pm — Happy Holidays from American Routes

Host Nick Spitzer presents a taste of seasonal music representing the broad range of the sound of America.

Live from the House of Blues in New Orleans, Nick is joined on stage by Dr. Michael White and his Liberty Jazz Band, the young Cajun band Feufollet, and New Orleans jump blues legend Deacon John, along with several special guests.



SUNDAY, JANUARY 3

7:00 pm — The Thistle & Shamrock: Raise a Glass

Many a fine song has been sung around the table to celebrate the company, lament the parting, and toast whatever lies ahead. Hand over your car keys and join in with Tony Cuffe, the Voice Squad and Robin Laing and raise a glass to the New Year.
