Neupert Bach Harpsichord (Photo: J C Neupert)

You may have read that Bach’s Well Tempered Clavier was written for a keyboard instrument in equal temperament.

Sorry to say, that’s not quite accurate. Maybe we should set the record straight. And while we’re at it, just what is "temperament," anyway?

Musicologist and educator Kyle Gann has written an Introduction to Historical Tunings. It explains what temperament is, how to categorize Bach’s WTC, and what Bach was trying to say musically.
